Sweden’s culture is both very different and similar to other cultures. Sweden has a variety of different sports that they play. Sweden holds orienteering races, where people use a map and a compass to cross an area as fast as possible. A favorite wintertime sport is called Bandy (similar to hockey) and can be played in an indoor gym or on ice. On December 13, Swedes have what is called Lucia Day. A girl plays the part of Saint Lucia or the “light queen.” She dresses in a white robe with a red silk ribbon around the waist and wears a crown of candles in her hair. She leads a procession and sings songs bringing joy to dark times. Sweden has a tradition called Smörgåsbord. Smörgåsbord means “sandwich table.” It is a large buffet with many delicious hot and cold dishes and desserts. Sweden also has cinnamon bun day and the cinnamon buns are similar to cinnamon rolls. Sweden has a very interesting culture.
